Dining Room Series: The Right Distance
Hosting a great dinner party starts with good design. No one wants to squeeze between chairs or trip over a rug or bang their hip against the sideboard. It all begins with the size of the furniture, placed at the right distance. I will be doing a dining room series where I share with you key measurements and placement tricks that will keep the parties flowing in your space.
The distance in which furniture is placed from each other in the room is important for proper flow and to ensure the right scale. Let's start with important measurements. The key to getting your space to look proportioned is not only having the right measurement but knowing where to measure from. You want to use your dining table as the reference point for all your measuring and not the dining chairs. The reason for this is because the table is stationary whereas the chairs get moved around.
Measurement number one is, the distance between the table and the wall should be a minimum of 36". The distance between the table and another piece of furniture should be a bit bigger at 48". The next measurement that's important is the amount of space for each chair should be a minimum of 24". This allows for elbow room and that one friend that talks with their whole body!
Here is an illustration to get a better idea of the measurements.
