Bedroom Q & A

The bedroom is the place of rest and relaxation, where we want to read a book or journal, maybe do some yoga or just be still. I like to call the bedroom my quiet place. The bedroom should feel light, airy, and comfortable but also beautiful and put together. Everything in its place and organized adds to the tranquility of the space. Styling a bedroom is more than just linens and furniture, it's also about injecting your personality and creating the space you need to escape our hectic day-to-day lives.
In this post, I am going to answer some key questions I've been asked about bedroom design. From furniture selections, artwork design, and challenges faced when designing a bedroom. We all deserve to have that dreamy bedroom that is not only styled beautifully but is functional and comfortable. So let's dive in...
What furniture pieces do I need in my bedroom?
So of course, everyone's needs are different when it comes to bedroom furniture but there are definitely key pieces that most of us need. A bed (obviously), size, and style are dependent on the amount of space you have. I would not recommend placing a canopy bed in a room with a ceiling height of less than 8 feet. Large-scale beds need room to breathe so keep that in mind when making your selection. A single nightstand of some sort, whether it be a simple pedestal table with just enough space for your phone and alarm clock, or a 3 drawer nightstand with a pullout tray for those avid readers; is a key piece of furniture to incorporate. If you want to use two nightstands I recommend not purchasing a matching bedroom set, but mixing up nightstand styles to add interest. The last "need" furniture piece is some sort of clothes storage however, if your room doesn't quite have the space for a 6-drawer dresser a closet organizer might be a good alternative.

In this bedroom, they used floating nightstands and wall sconces to allow the room to feel more spacious around the large canopy bed.
Is wallpaper in a bedroom outdated?
A bedroom is a great place to add wallpaper! In fact the more walls the better! Lately, wallpaper has actually been on trend for many spaces like powder bathrooms, laundry, mudrooms, dining rooms, and even bedrooms. There are two ways to incorporate wallpaper. If you love bold patterns or bright color wallpaper, then I recommend incorporating solid complimenting colors on large pieces of furniture, bedding, and window treatments; this creates moments for the eye to rest so the room doesn't feel too busy. If you are looking to add a subtle pattern or color wallpaper, then you just need to ensure that all the colors and patterns play well together. You can always mix patterns like geometric patterns with floral patterns or textured fabrics, as long as the colors complement each other. In the image below, notice the bold wallpaper is complemented with all-white bed linens and pillows, as well as with a sold camel color headboard that complements the whole mood of the wallpaper.

Where is the best place to hang art in a bedroom?
For most, the answer would be above the bed or above the dresser. There is no wrong answer here, its all about preference. If there is one thing I would recommend is choosing the correct scale of art that fits the space you want to hang it. I personally love one oversized piece of art off to the side and nothing really over the bed. However, if your wanting to hang artwork above the bed, keep in mind any overhead lighting that may block the art. Creating a gallery wall is a great way to incorporate art above the bed or even above a dresser.
Can you put an area rug over carpeted bedroom?
This one is personal preference, with no right or wrong answer. I personally say, absolutely! An area rug is a great way to add pattern and color to the bedroom. Area rugs also anchor furniture, almost framing it in a way that makes the space feel tailored. A key thing to note here when selecting an area rug, pick colors that are in the same family as in the example below.
What is the best window treatment for a bedroom when you want privacy?
Window treatments can be tricky in a bedroom simply because sometimes there are furniture pieces in the way and because most of us like to sleep in but don't necessarily want heavy curtains. There are black-out or fully lined curtain panels available, but an alternative would be inside-mount roman shades. Roman shades offer another opportunity to inject your personality and can be paired with long drapery panels, or stand-alone in areas where furniture may be in the way.
How do I add a desk to my bedroom?
These days most of us work from home either full-time or part-time and need to create some dual-purpose spaces. There are a few ways to incorporate a desk into a bedroom. You can make a grand statement using a desk flanked by taller storage towers on either side. This will bring the eye up, making the space feel larger. If space is limited, you can always use a desk in the place of a nightstand. Just remember when selecting a desk to add to a bedroom, be consistent with the style so that the room feels cohesive.
